Welcome to Bangladesh

It is already summer. The weather is pretty sultry, with occasional storms called Nor’westers to cool the evening.

Fruits of this season like Lichis, Jackfruits, Mangoes, Watermelons are already available in the markets.

Working people of the country will celebrate May Day with due fanfare. Members of the Buddhist community of the country will observe the Buddha Purnima, an important religious occasion for them.

In this issue, we have focussed on Bangabazar. The fame of this market selling trendy, yet low-priced garments has spread not only beyond the confines of this market at Fulbaria in the city, but also Dhaka and other cities of the world. The market is renowned for sale of readymade garments, shirts, trousers, shorts, jackets, hosiery, sweater, ladies’ wear, footwear at cheap prices in both wholesale and retail trade.

Bangabazar is not for novice shoppers. Only an expert eye can often detect good items. The main feature of the market is the bargain price at all the shops. Any item sold here can be purchased as low as 30 to 40 per cent of the asking price. So be careful while fixing the price of the items, haggling with the salesman.

I am sure you will visit Bangabazar at your convenient time during your stay in Dhaka.
